10 EPL stars who tried to force moves

English Premier League

Following reports that Harry Kane is on strike with the aim of forcing a move to Manchester City, here are 10 other Premier League players who took drastic action to force an exit from their teams.

The England captain was due to return for pre-season training with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday following his participation at the 2020 UEFA European Championship with the Three Lions. However, he did not turn up.

It has since been widely reported that the 28-year-old has not showed up at Spurs in an effort to get what he wants: a move to Pep Guardiola's Citizens.

The striker is not the first Spurs player to have tried this tactic ahead of a potential transfer, however.

In August 2013, Gareth Bale failed to report for training in a bid to secure a move to Real Madrid, with Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy reportedly refusing to accept the LaLiga side's £85 million (R1.6 billion) bid for the player due to concerns about how Los Blancos proposed to pay for the deal.

Soon after his attempts to put pressure on the London club, though, Bale got his desired move and received the title of being the most expensive British player ever in the process.

Another controversial episode involved Pierre van Hooijdonk, a former Netherlands and Nottingham Forest striker who wanted to leave the English club in December 1997.

In response to this request, his then-manager Dave Bassett promised to sell him at the end of the 1997/98 campaign, but then reportedly rejected bids for him in the following transfer window.

This angered the Dutch striker to the point that he returned to the Netherlands and refused to go back to England until late November, long after the next season had kicked off.

By the time that the prolific forward returned, Forest were already in a relegation scrap, and, despite the player scoring a few goals, this was not enough to save them from dropping out the Premier League.

Other players who reportedly took matters into their own hands to get out of clubs include the controversial duo of Diego Costa and Peter Odemwingie – scroll through the gallery above to see more EPL stars who tried to force exits from their teams!
