Man City clinch vital derby victory

English Premier League

The Citizens dominated possession throughout the first half but struggled to create clear-cut openings.

Silva opened the scoring from a corner in the 42nd minute after he swept home from close range, having latched onto a loose ball that fell kindly for him in the six yard area.

However, City’s lead lasted little over four minutes before a swift break from the home side allowed a Marcos Rojo cross to find an unmarked Marcus Rashford at the back post to calmly finished on the stroke of halftime.

After a quiet start to the second half, City restored their lead in the 53rd minute when Otamendi volleyed home from close range following a poor clearance from Romelu Lukaku.

The charismatic Zlatan Ibrahimovic came on for Ander Herrera with 15 minutes to spare and was involved in United’s best opportunity to draw level.

This, when Anthony Martial found Lukaku, who met the cross with a powerful effort, only to be denied by City’s goalkeeper Ederson.

The Brazilian shot-stopper took a blow in the face from Lukaku’s effort and followed that up with the save of the match from what looked a certain goal by United substitute Juan Mata.

However, City managed to see out the closing stages to claim a valuable victory.
