Arsenal deny Blues three points

English Premier League

The Blues should have gone ahead in the 13th minute but Alvaro Morata placed his effort horribly wide with only Petr Cech to beat in the box.

The Gunners had a chance of their own three minutes later but Thibaut Courtois produced a stunning save to push Alexis Sanchez's effort onto the upright.

The chances continued to fall in the first half and Cech had to be at his best in the 27th minute to keep out Tiemoue Bakayoko's close range strike after the Arsenal defence was caught napping.

Both sides looked sharp in the first half as it proved to be an end-to-end affair although they were let down by their decision-making.

Chelsea squandered another chance just before the break when Eden Hazard teed up Cesc Fabregas, who fired horribly wide as the sides went into the break goalless.

The Blues came out firing in the second half and carved out a chance in the 49th minute but Cech was on hand to deny Hazard and Marcos Alonso in quick succession.

A few minutes later, Courtois was called into action at the other end with the Belgian shot-stopper producing a good stop to thwart Alexandre Lacazette from 12-yards out.

It was the Gunners who broke the deadlock on 62 minutes as Rob Holding's deflected pass fell to the feet of Jack Wilshere, who volleyed into the roof of the net from close range, 1-0.

Three minutes later, Chelsea were awarded a penalty when Hector Bellerin was adjudged to have brought down Hazard, who stepped up and smashed home the spot-kick, 1-1.

With 10 minutes remaining in the half, Arsene Wenger opted to withdraw Lacazette for Danny Welbeck while Chelsea introduced Willian for Hazard.

The Blues took the lead in the 83rd minute as Davide Zappacosta got to the byline for picking out Alonso, who flicked the ball past Cech, 1-2.

The Gunners threw on Theo Walcott in the the closing stages in their attempt to secure an equaliser.

The equaliser arrived in the second minute of stoppage time as Alonso's clearance fell to Bellerin, who sent a fine volley into the top corner, 2-2.

Chelsea nearly restored their lead moments later but Morata failed to beat Cech while Zappacosta rattled the crossbar from the rebound.

That proved to be the final chance of the half as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils.
