Mabunda targets Zamalek scalp

CAF Champions League

Sundowns have travelled to Cairo, for their contest at Petro Sport Stadium on Sunday, aware that another win will brng them one step closer to progression to the semi-finals of the competition.

Mabunda, who has suddenly revived his career and is enjoying his best times since arriving at Chloorkop three years ago, says they are well informed about the pedigree of The White Knight but that is no deterrent of their ambitons.

“We know that Zamalek will not be an easy team because they have won this competition on many occasions,” Mabunda tells

“It is not going to be an easy game for us but we have prepared well and have analysed their weakness that we are aware of, as well as their strengths that we have to be cautious about.

"We believe with the ability we have showcased throughout the competition thus far that we have the opportunity to once again do what we always do, which is the mandate from the coach of playing to getmaximum points."

The former Free State Stars man stresses that a win would strengthen their chances of topping the group, which only features three teams after the disqualification of ES Setif.

“So we are going to Egypt to get maximum points; nothing less than maximum points because once we get the three points we will be in the driving seat," he adds.

"We will have six points, Zamalek three and Enyimba zero, with two games for each team to play. That will definitely put us one step ahead of both teams because, once they play against each other, whatever result comes from that match will favour us.

"We know that right now all we need to do is focus on winning in Egypt and then finish off the job here at home in the return leg.”

Mabunda bagged his first goal for The Brazilians against ES Setif, which has since been ruled out after the Algerians were disqualified by CAF, however, the the 28-year-old says it has motivated him more to try and break his duck again.

“Now that the goal means nothing it works as an encouragement for me to break the ice yet again with another similar goal that I hope will win us a match. I am actually motivated right now,” he concludes.
