Bidvest Wits were also eliminated on Sunday from the second-tier Confederation Cup with a 7-3 loss to Tanzanian outfit, with Ajax Cape Town earlier exiting the event at the first hurdle at the hands of Sagrada Esperanca.

Mamelodi Sundowns, however, progressed to the second round of the Champions League on Saturday with a 3-1 aggregate win over Congolese side AC Leopards.

“Obviously I don't like it because what we don't want to find is a situation where we go back down to one team representing us in the Champions League,” says Tinkler, who guided Bucs to the 2015 Confederation Cup final.

“We don't get teams going through at least to group phases and that could happen again.

“I think it is important that we have our teams representing the PSL ultimately in the continental competition.”
