CAF Champions League

The reigning African champions appeared to have come with the intention of sitting back and hoping to catch Pirates on the counter in their Group B tie at Orlando Stadium on the weekend.

At the final whistle, with the score at 0-0, the visitors celebrated the result as they were lucky to escape with a point after The Buccaneers dominated much of proceedings but failed to bury their chances.

Chaabani, a former defender for the Tunisian giants, insisted they came with the intention of winning but were a bit fatigued after a tough week in which they played two domestic matches before travelling the length of the continent.

“It was a very good match from a tactical perspective. I think my players came in with the desire to obtain a good result,” said Chaabani.

“We find ourselves in a tough group where we have three teams – Esperance, Orlando Pirates and Horoya – with equal chances to proceed from the group stages.

“To be honest, it wasn’t easy for us [against Pirates] because we played two away games, where we’ve had two draws, and coming into this game we had also played in a cup match.

“I would like to congratulate my players, I’m very happy with their performance and I hope they will continue in the same vain.”

Asked whether he was content with taking home the point, despite remaining second in the group after three rounds of fixtures, the Tunisian tactician conceded that both teams could have scored and thus the point was a fair outcome.

“Orlando Pirates is amongst one of the best teams in Africa – ss we’ve mentioned before, they previously beat us in Tunis [in 2013 Champions League semi-final],” he added.

“Considering that it has been a tough week for us, and the fact that our last game was a cup game in which we played 120 minutes, so we’ll take the point away from home.

“I think this was an open game. Anybody could have won it, we could have scored just as we could have also conceded.”
