VOTE: KickOff Footballer of the Season

Premiership

It is that time of the year again when you, the jury, is called upon to decide the best player of the 2020/21 season from the eight nominees provided. Who will you be selecting as the next KICK OFF Footballer of the Season?

PETER SHALULILE

The Mamelodi Sundowns talisman is nominated for the KICK OFF Footballer of the Season for a second successive year and is hoping to this time take home the prize.

The 27-year-old forward is evidently in the peak of his career and has looked like a seasoned campaigner in the colours of The Brazilians, despite only arriving in Chloorkop from Highlands Park at the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

THEMBA ZWANE

‘Mshishi’ is back again and, at 31-years-old, seems to be maturing like fine wine. He remains an integral figure in Sundowns’ setup, leading the team’s charge for a record fourth successive league title.

Zwane is proving that his PSL Footballer of the Season award from 2019/20 was no fluke and he will be hoping not only to defend his crown, but also this time around add the KICK OFF gong to his impressive collection of individual accolades.

RUZAIGH GAMILDIEN

Gamildien is enjoying a breakout campaign at Swallows FC, where he arrived at the start of the season from his second spell with Chippa United. The 31-year-old PSL journeyman has turned out for nine different clubs across the top-flight and second-tier.

Under Brandon Truter, however, he has found a new lease of life and is spearheading the Dube Birds’ attack with aplomb. ‘Zaiky’ has finally rid himself of the off-field distractions that had so often led him astray and his rebirth has seen him average more than one goal in every two games in the opening two thirds of the season.

MDUDUZI MDANTSANE

The diminutive midfield workhorse has been a standout performer for Cape Town City this season, chipping in with an impressive tally of goals despite coming from deeper down the pitch.

Taking away his contribution would undoubtedly see The Citizens drop towards the bottom end of the log table, as he not only scores but also has an eye for picking out his teammates in better positions.

Mdantsane spent three years at Baroka prior to his move to the Mother City at the start of 2020 but already he is close to surpassing his total number of goals scored in Limpopo, in just his first full season under Jan Olde Riekerink.

BRADLEY GROBLER

Grobler narrowly missed out on a KICK OFF Footballer of the Season nomination last campaign after his impressive 17-goal tally across all competitions for SuperSport United. However, his consistency has ensured he is not overlooked this time around as he guns for his first ever Golden Boot award, after having led the scoring charts for most of the season.

At 33 years old, he is the eldest among the 2020/21 nominees but happens to be the deadliest in front of goal – having averaged a goal every 130 minutes as at the end of March.

FORTUNE MAKARINGE

Makaringe has been hugely influential for Orlando Pirates this season, despite not having many direct involvements in the team’s goals.

His ability to serve as the link between defense and attack is often unplayable, regardless of who he partners with in the heart of midfield – be it Thabang Monare, Ben Motshwari, Linda Mntambo or Siphesihle Ndlovu.

DEON HOTTO

2019 KICK OFF Footballer of the Season Deon Hotto is back again after impressing in his first season at Orlando Pirates.

The Namibia international has scored and assisted in every single competition he has featured in in 2020/21, including the DStv Premiership, MTN8, CAF Confederation Cup and Nedbank Cup.

He is one of Josef Zinnbauer’s go-to men, having featured in all of the team’s domestic fixtures and, like Makaringe, has missed just two matches in all competitions as at the end of March, whether he has been in the starting line-up or coming in off the bench.

AUGUSTINE MULENGA

Augustine Mulenga was largely considered a ‘flop’ at Orlando Pirates, where he managed just 39 starts in one-and-a-half seasons of working under coaches Milutin Sredojevic, Rulani Mokwena and Josef Zinnbauer.

But his move to AmaZulu at the start of the season and working under legendary former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has afforded him an opportunity to reaffirm his quality.
