Kungwane Jnr turns on the style

Star Style

While Shakes mesmerised opponents with his deft, left-footed touch and kasi flair that made him a firm crowd favourite, Kabelo Kungwane displays similar street smarts and a fun-loving swagger, albeit in a different industry altogether.

It wasn’t only his father’s obvious talents on the football pitch that Kabelo looked up to growing up. Kungwane Snr’s taste in the finer things in life left an indelible mark on his son.

“My fascination with fashion came from my father,” he says.

“Fans mostly saw him on the field in club colours but what many people don’t know is he had lots of style and great taste in clothing, perfume and even hairstyles.”

A founding member of popular style collective The Sartists alongside Andile Buka and Wanda Lephoto, Kungwane has an eye for all things vintage while constantly referencing past eras for inspiration.

“I’m a collector of all things classic. I particularly like old-school sportswear of the 70s, 80s and 90s because of the connection to i-diski,” he continues.

Named one of GQ’s Best dressed men in SA 2015, the 22-year-old is currently working on a sportswear project with his collective, paying homage to township football and diski legends.
