Dlamini takes up a career in music

Dlamini, who was part of the Banyana squad that played Sweden in an international friendly yesterday, has released a track called Unembeza with DJ Tonic HD, which is available for download (https://www.sendspace.com/file/kgvmv9).

She is not only a talented goalkeeper, but she was born with a soulful voice which she wants to use to inspire South Africans.

“I love singing with of all heart. My teammates encouraged me to do a song because I was not taking it seriously. This is in me, I love it and I always come up with songs. I guess I have always had a musical background because my grandmother was a pastor and there was a lot of singing at church. My mom used to sing at church, so surely it was in me. It’s a song I did with DJ Tonic HD, who also encouraged me to do this. He came up with the beat and said I should write the lyrics. My teammate at Sundowns Bongiwe Thusi also played a big role. She used to go with me to studio late at night. She used to motivate me, saying I should do my thing and that she believes I can do it.”

Unembeza was inspired by the death of former University of Pretoria player Dumisani Masilela, who went on to be a singer and an actor. Masilela was killed last year in Tembisa after he was shot by hijackers.

“My first song is called Take me away, but it’s not out yet. I had to release Unembeza first because of the death of Dumi Masilela. It was so emotional for me. I wanted to meet that guy. He was a soccer player, but he was also a singer and an actor. He used to motivate me and he did not even know. This is a song that I believe will help in stopping crime. You can dance to it and it also gives a message. It’s an emotional happy song.”

She has a dream of singing on a stage in front of a big crowd.

“I always picture that happening. I always picture people cheering me on and seeing me on stage. I want the the people who played a role in my life to have a proud moment because they pushed me so hard.

“Through my music I can make football popular. I can create a lot of opportunities for girls. What I say might be heard and taken to other people. If I get a chance to create songs and people love them, then I would do it with my football career at the same time because it’s two things I really love.”

Her favourite artist is Beyonce, but there are many others she likes.

“My favourite is Beyonce. I also like John Legend, Chris Brown, Sam Smith and Adele. Recently I started liking Kelly Khumalo. She’s got a wonderful voice. I like Zonke and Vusi Nova. I love Vusi Nova’s song called I’d rather go blind. But Beyonce is the one I have been listening to mostly.”
