UEFA Nations League match report Spain v France

accreditation

France were crowned UEFA Nations League champions with a 2-1 triumph over Spain on Sunday evening.

Two-goal hero Ferran Torres was passed fit and started up top for Spain, as Les Blues handed starts to Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield and Presnel Kimpembe in the defensive wall.

Spain almost fell behind five minutes in after Les Blues counter-pressed through the middle and thread in Karim Benzema, but Cesar Azpilicueta cleared away the threat.

The Spaniards continued to trouble the French as the half began to die down with sustained ball possession, as Marcos Alonso drilled a free-kick narrowly beyond the bottom-corner.

France’s frustrations extended to the dugout five minutes to halftime, as Dayot Upamecano took off his training gear to replace Raphael Varane who had succumbed to an injury.

Les Blues continued to find the going tough as the second half got underway, but could’ve been ahead minutes in through Theo Hernandez’s close-range shot that hit the underside of the bar.

It is a chance that Les Blues lived to rue barely a minute later as Mikel Oyarzabal shrugged off near side a challenge by Upamecano to fire into the far corner.

France didn’t mess about and went level immediately when Benzema drew a cutback from far wide of the area before curling in off the top-hand post after opening a yard of space.

Benzema should’ve gone on to a brace a little thereafter from a smart attempt outside the area and with Unai Simon caught out, but he went over.

The world champions turned the game around in the last ten minutes after Kylian Mbappe ran onto a pass in behind to beat Simon with a low finish from point-blank range, with calls for offside dismissed.

France almost threw away their lead near the end, but Hugo Lloris made two telling stops to parry Oyarzabal as Les Blues secured their first UEFA Nations League title.
