Morocco captain Romain Saiss made a big claim about the referee following their loss to Bafana Bafana on Tuesday night.

Goals from Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena helped South Africa to a 2-0 victory, knocking the Atlas Lions out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking after the game, though, Saiss criticised some of the refereeing decisions, including the one to award Bafana's opener.

The Moroccans had appealed for an offside, but after a VAR check to determine whether Makgopa was in a legal position, the goal was awarded.

"We are not looking for excuses, but reality obliges us to talk about these details, very blatant and heavy refereeing lapses that take us back years, such as the opponent's first goal, how it was calculated, and depriving us of explicit privileges," Saiss said, per Kooora.

Morocco had their fair share of chances, registering 13 shots, although just two were on target, and the 33-year-old also admitted that his side was wasteful in front of goal.

"We wasted a lot of chances and completely dominated and took possession, but they scored from fewer chances," Saiss added.

"This is football, where you only recognise the result in the end. We have a wonderful generation of players, and we will not allow this result to frustrate us."

For Bafana, the result means that they have secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the 1996 AFCON champions are now set to take on Cape Verde on Saturday night.
