A Spain international on the books of Real Madrid is said to be on the verge of switching his international allegiance from the European nation to an African side.

A number of notable players switched their allegiances in 2022 prior to the FIFA World Cup in November, including Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams, who went from Spain to Ghana, and Brighton & Hove Albion fullback Tariq Lamptey, who opted for the Black stars as well, over his country of birth England.

Both featured for the African side in Qatar, but were unfortunately knocked out at the group stages.

Another European player is now expected to follow a similar route taken by the abovementioned pair.

According to journalist Lino Bacco, AC Milan attacker Brahim Diaz will represent Morocco from the next international break in March.

Diaz, who is on loan at the Serie A club from Los Blancos, was previously approached by the Atlas Lions ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with then-manager Herve Renard giving the player assurances that he would include him in his plans for the tournament, but the playmaker declined the opportunity at the time.

The Malaga-born star now appears to have had a change of heart, however, after not playing a competitive game for Spain since his debut appearance in June 2021, in a game against European minnows Lithuania.

Diaz, who also represented La Furia Roja at U17, U19 and U21 levels, qualifies for Morocco through his grandmother, who was born in the African nation.

In Morocco's history-making 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar, an incredible 14 players were born outside the country in nations such as France, Spain Netherlands and Belgium, while only 12 were born on home soil.
