After Cristiano Ronaldo was seen angrily remonstrating with Portugal boss Fernando Santos on Sunday, the manager has now revealed what was said, while the forward also broke his silence on his team's defeat.

A Selecao suffered a blow in their bid to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after missing out on top spot in their group following their 2-1 loss to Serbia on the weekend.

Santos' side will now have to go through the play-offs to make it to the upcoming tournament, but could have already qualified if they did not drop points to Ireland and Serbia in successive matches.

After the final whistle of the shock defeat on Sunday, the Manchester United forward was visibly upset, and was seen seemingly voicing his concerns with the veteran head coach in an aggressive manner after the final whistle.

However, Santos has now insisted that the 36-year-old's behaviour was not out of the ordinary and therefore nothing to be concerned about.

"Nobody was explaining anything," the Portuguese manager said, per Eurosport

"He was telling the other guy that there [in Serbia for a qualifier in March this year] he had scored a goal at the last minute and that the referee didn't count [it].

"That's what he was saying at the time.

"On the field, he said that we scored a goal there and the referee didn't, but it's his outburst.

"It's perfectly normal. Now no one goes after a game to explain what happened or didn't happen. I went to raise the players' heads."

Ronaldo himself took to social media on Monday to give his thoughts on the result.

"Football has shown us time and again that sometimes it's the winding roads that lead us to the most desired outcomes," he wrote in a post on Instagram.

"Yesterday's result was tough, but not enough to bring us down.

"The goal of attending the World Cup 2022 is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there.

"No excuses. Portugal bound for Qatar."
