One of the biggest clubs in Europe has now been ordered to pay Cristiano Ronaldo €9.7 million (R197 million) by a court.

According to RMC Sport, the Arbitration Tribunal of the Italian Football Federation has told Juventus they must pay their former forward €9.7 million in outstanding wages.

The decision comes after the 39-year-old decided to take legal action against the club in September 2023 over unpaid wages during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A number of Juve players are understood to have agreed to defer months' worth of wages in 2020 and 2021 due to the massive financial toll the pandemic had on the club.

Ronaldo is said to have initially demanded a €19.5 million (R395 million) payment from the Italian giants for failing to fulfil their commitment to him, but the court decided to order the Bianconeri to pay about half of that amount, including interest and procedural costs.

The Old Lady are yet to comment on the matter, but reports suggest the club has indicated they will put out a statement in due course.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner, meanwhile, spent three seasons in Turin between 2018 and 2021, scoring 101 goals in 134 appearances for the side.

Upon leaving the club in 2021 for a return to Manchester United, Ronaldo wrote on social media: "We wrote a pretty beautiful story together. I will always be one of you. You are part of my history, as I feel that I'm part of yours. Italy, Juve, Turin, tiffosi bianconeri, you'll always be in my heart."
