It has been confirmed that a former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs manager has been sacked from his latest job just 12 months after being appointed.

French manager Philippe Troussier has been fired from the Vietnam national team after the side's 3-0 loss to Indonesia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The tactician is known in South Africa for having coached both the South Africa national team and Amakhosi in the 1990s.

Despite winning his first three games following his appointment in March last year, the 69-year-old has now departed the role with a miserable record of 10 defeats in 14 games.

It is understood he was informed of the decision immediately after the loss to Indonesia on Tuesday night

"Mr. Philippe Troussier thanked the support from the players, clubs, football federation as well as the fans," Vietnam's football federation said in a statement.

"He also apologised to Vietnamese fans because the team's work did not meet expectations."

Vietnam now need six points from their remaining two World Cup qualifying group games, and at the same time also need Indonesia to lose both their remaining matches in order to progress to the next round of qualifiers.

Troussier has had an illustrious career in international football, having managed nations such as Japan, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Morocco.
