With Manchester United on the verge of welcoming new owners, club has now reportedly identified a surprising potential first signing for January 2024, one who was previously considered a Premier League flop.

According to the Daily Mirror, British tycoon Sir Jim Ratcliffe is finalising a £1.3 billion (R30 billion) deal that will see him acquire a 25% stake in the EPL giants, with it understood this will give him and his company INEOS control over the club's football operations.

It is believed one of the top priorities for the incoming management is to improve recruitment at Old Trafford, and it is now reported they have now a potential first signing for the January transfer window.

Sky Sports has claimed that United have shortlisted former Chelsea forward Timo Werner as their next signing.

With the 27-year-old having seen his minutes reduced under RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose this season, the Red Devils are said to have already enquired about his availability.

The report further suggests that United are in the market for a new striker to support Rasmus Hojlund, with Anthony Martial is viewed as unreliable due to his poor injury record.

It is further claimed that Werner would prefer to remain at his club, however, despite the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda this season having provided more competition in the squad.

The Germany international previously spent two seasons in the Premier League with Chelsea, but left the Blues in August 2022 to return to his former employers following what many felt was an underwhelming spell.

He made 89 appearances for the Stamford Bridge club, registering 23 goals and 21 assists, and also won three trophies with the London outfit: the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
