Reports now suggest that Manchester United will make a shock attempt to sign a certain 34-year-old star in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils are already looking to the next window to reinforce their squad amid an underwhelming first four months to the season.

The club has lost six times in the Premier League already, and they are now on the brink of UEFA Champions League elimination after picking up just one win in five group games.

This has put manager Erik ten Hag under the spotlight, with seemingly increasing calls for his potential sacking being made.

United will reportedly look to the January transfer window to salvage their campaign, with a several potential signings having been mooted already.

Various sources have indicated that the English giants are now monitoring the likes of defender Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice and striker Serhou Guirassy for Stuttgart.

However, a surprise veteran is now also said to be on their radar ahead of the January window.

According to Bild, United are interested in signing Bayern Munich talisman Thomas Muller next month.

The 34-year-old is out of favour in Bavaria, with the blockbuster arrival of Harry Kane in August being a big reason of his limited game time this season.

It is believed Ten Hag tried to lure Muller to Old Trafford last January but his attempts then were fruitless.

With the Germany forward's current contract expiring in June 2024, United could have an opportunity to sign Muller in a cut-price deal.

He is understood to be keen on signing a new deal in Bavaria, though, and Bayern president Herbert Hainer recently revealed he is confident that the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner will stay on beyond this season.

Speaking to Bild-TV, Hainer said: "Thomas knows exactly what he has at FC Bayern, and we know what we have in Thomas. I can also imagine that things can happen relatively quickly.

"Thomas is an absolutely deserving player. We all want Thomas to end his career at Bayern Munich. We are in talks with him and I really hope that Thomas Müller stays with us."

Former Bayern star Lothar Matthaus, meanwhile, has advised that the marksman should move on as his role in the team is on a "gradual decline".

In a column for Sky Germany, Matthaus wrote: "At Bayern Munich, he will no longer get the minutes he got two years ago. If he has the confidence to play from the start like he did two years ago, then he has to change clubs. You have to say that openly. Muller's situation looks like a gradual decline.

"As far as Muller's future at Bayern is concerned, the question is what Thomas wants. Is he content with only being a part-time worker or even not playing at all? Muller is rooted in Munich, but perhaps he can imagine a new life experience, for example in North America?"
