Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly made a big decision on midfielder Donny van de Beek's future at Old Trafford.

Expectations were high in 2020 when United made the €39 million (R684 million) signing of Van de Beek from Ajax Amsterdam on a lengthy five-year deal.

The playmaker had impressed for the Eredivisie giants, having been one of the standout players in the side's sensational run to the semi-finals in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League campaign.

His time in Manchester has not gone according to plan, though, with the 25-year-old having registered just 53 appearances for the club across all competitions.

During his two years in England to date, the attacking midfielder has just four goal involvements for the Red Devils, while he was also sent out on a six-month loan to Merseyside outfit Everton for the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, making just seven appearances for the Toffees.

The arrival of Christian Eriksen, who has started every match for United this season, also seems to have pushed Van de Beek further down the pecking order, with his future under his former Ajax coach looking uncertain.

Injuries have also been a recurring feature in the Dutchman's time in England, and he has already missed clashes against Southampton, Leicester City, Real Sociedad, Sheriff Tiraspol, Arsenal and Manchester City this season as a result.

According to GiveMeSport, Ten Hag has now deemed the Netherlands star surplus to requirements, with an exit in January said to be on the cards.

During the latest transfer window, it was reported that Van de Beek was pushing for a departure, and his former agent Guido Albers confirmed those reports last week.

"In the Netherlands, Donny got all the appreciation, performed well and was super popular with the fans," Albers told Voetbal Primeur.

"At Manchester United, he then never played. The relationship between him and the club really cooled down badly.

"He had to compete against Paul Pogba, who reported late to the training camp, said sorry and was allowed to play again – in the place of a boy who was training 10 hours a day for eight weeks to show he was good enough."
