English giants Manchester United have now reportedly made contact with one of their former coaches amid the uncertainty around Erik ten Hag's future at the club.

The Red Devils have approached Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, with "concrete contacts" having taken place between the 38-year-old and the United hierarchy, according to Foot Mercato.

The Northern Irish tactician was previously an assistant coach at Old Trafford and worked under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.  

However, he departed the club in 2021 to join Ipswich and pursue his own managerial ambitions.  

Since taking control of the Tractor Boys, the side has achieved back-to-back promotions, finishing second in League One in 2022/23, and then second again in the EFL Championship this season, which will see the side play top-flight football in the next campaign. 

It is believed United, with new co-owner English billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are looking at alternatives to Ten Hag, who has endured a tough second season in charge.

The 20-time EPL winners are eighth on the table and face the possibility of not participating in a European competition for the first time since 2014.    

With the Dutchman's future at the club uncertain, the Red Devils have reportedly also considered the appointment of England manager Gareth Southgate.  

However, it has been suggested that because the 53-year-old would not be available until after the 2024 UEFA European Championship, the side's hierarchy has turned to McKenna, who would be available immediately.

The former Tottenham Hotspur youth coach is also said to be excited at the prospect of returning to the Manchester club.
