FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez says it's an "injustice" that Sergio Busquets has never been among the nominees for the Ballon d'Or.

The club confirmed this week that the Spanish midfielder will be leaving when his contract expires at the end of the current season.

Busquets has won every trophy on offer for both Barcelona and Spain but never grabbed the headlines like Lionel Messi or his former midfield partners Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

The Spain international has only ever received one nomination in 2012, but finished 20th in the voting.

The Barcelona manager had some high praise for Busquets ahead of Sunday's Catalan derby against Espanyol, where they can clinch the LaLiga title.

"He is the best pivot, deep midfielder, whatever you want to call it, that I have seen with my eyes," Xavi said, as per ESPN.

"It always seemed a massive injustice to me that he was never among the nominees for the Ballon d'Or. There is a lot of injustice in football and that was one of them.

"He is perhaps the most intelligent midfielder I played with. He has been a 10 out of 10 in every department and is the best pivot in Barca's history."

Busquets has racked up 719 appearances for the Catalan giant since making his debut for the first team in 2008 under Pep Guardiola.
