Robert Lewandowski has insisted he wants to play alongside Lionel Messi at FC Barcelona next season.

Robert Lewandowski, whose attempt at a handshake was reportedly refused by Lionel Messi at the 2022 World Cup, has now had his say on the superstar being linked with a return to FC Barcelona.

It was recently reported that the Argentine superstar's father and agent, Jorge Messi, had another meeting with Barca president Joan Laporta to discuss the 35-year-old's potential homecoming at the Camp Nou.

The player has just over two months left on his contract at Paris Saint-Germain and in recent weeks, the possibility of him signing a contract renewal has decreased given the attacker's strained relationship with PSG supporters, some of whom booed at him during a match against Stade Rennais last month.

While Lewandowski and Messi have never played to together, they do share a bit of a history following their "spat" regarding the 2021 Ballon d'Or award.

The Poland international was beaten to the Golden Ball by the Argentina skipper that year, with the latter expressing that the former deserved to win the 2020 edition, which was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The former Bayern Munich striker appeared to take issue with Messi's remarks at the time, though, suggesting that the South American words were "empty".

The pair seemingly clashed again at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when Messi appeared to ignore Lewandowski's attempt at a handshake after they were involved in a challenge during a group match between the Albiceleste and Poland.

A few words were shared between them, but the PSG forward refused to divulge what was said in their exchange.

However, Lewandowski looks to have put any differences he has with the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner aside amid reports that Messi could be set for a fairy-tale homecoming in Catalonia.

"Messi belongs at Barca and if he comes back, it will be incredible," the Pole said, according to Mundo Deportivo.

"We know his place is here at Barcelona.

"I don't know what will happen, but I hope that next season we can play together."
