Manchester United defeated Wigan Athletic 2-0 to secure their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Monday night.

Erik ten Hag made two changes from the side that started the loss to Nottingham Forest, as Antony made way for Rasmus Hojlund while Scott McTominay replaced Christian Eriksen.

The game got off to a lively start when Thelo Aasgaard was denied by United shot-stopper Andre Onana after just three minutes, while Marcus Rashford was denied by Sam Tickle at the other end after 15 minutes.

The opening goal arrived on 22 minutes when Diogo Dalot collected a pass from Rashford before sending a neat curling finish beyond Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle.

The woodwork came to the home side's rescue in the 29th minute when Hojlund sent a powerful header onto the crossbar from Bruno Fernandes' cross, although the striker should have done better from six yards out.

While Wigan struggled to carve out chances, Alejandro Garnacho went agonisingly close to doubling the lead five minutes before the break as his powerful strike from distance crash against the crossbar.

United carried that dominance over to the second period and went close to bagging a second goal ten minutes but Kobbie Mainoo saw his powerful strike from the edge of the box saved by Pickle.

The visitors did get the second goal with 16 minutes remaining in the second half when Fernandes converted a penalty after the United skipper had been brought down by Liam Shaw in the box.

The Red Devils did push for more goals in the closing stages of the encounter but they were let down by their finishing as the two goals were enough to seal a spot in the fourth round, where they will face either Newport County or Eastleigh.

Ten Hag's side will be back in action on Sunday evening when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
