Liverpool missed the chance to regain top spot in the Premier League following a 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.
Wataru Endo, Jarell Quansah and Andrew Robertson were recalled by the Reds, as youngster Willy Kambwala and Marcus Rashford came in for United after their dramatic late defeat to Chelsea.
A lively start had the Reds threatened early through Dominik Szoboszlai but Andre Onana parried before Alejandro Garnacho had a rounded strike disallowed for offside.
It remained even thereafter, though the Reds had the lead when Luis Diaz latched on the end of Darwin Nunez’s flick on from a corner and applied an overhead finish past Onana.
Liverpool targeted more beyond the half-hour mark through a curling shot by Mohamed Salah after mis-placed possession amongst others, but Onana parried.
Nunez looked to make it two a minute to halftime following a one-two with Robertson out on the left, but Onana again produced a smart save.
Skipper Fernandes lighted up the venue five minutes in the second half when he capitalised on Quansah’s stray pass across the half-way line and lobbed the advancing Caoimhin Kelleher.
It became pretty end-to-end which saw chances at both ends through Rashford for United before Nunez first-time pull from a tight angle flew across the face of the area.
Rising star Kobbie Mainoo put the host ahead for the first time in the match midway through the half when he dropped a shoulder after cutting inside and curled in the far corner.
The host continued to have all the momentum and reinforced the stall with Antony on in the place of Rashford.
Diaz, who got the opener, closed-in on a brace with a low first-time shot but Onana pushed away before Nunez hoofed the follow-up.
Liverpool did level six minutes to full-time when Salah fired in from the penalty spot as Carlos Casemiro had handled in the area.
No further goals followed despite the chances from the two set of teams, and all square it finished with Liverpool denied top spot.
