Both Manchester City and Liverpool missed the chance to go top of the Premier League table after playing to a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening.

The Reds surprisingly had talisman Mohamed Salah back from injury but only fit enough to start from the bench, as Dominik Szoboszlai, Jarell Quansah, Darwin Nunez and Wataru Endo were the four changes from the narrow win over Nottingham Forest.

City, meanwhile, showed only two changes following their win over Manchester United, as Julian Alvarez and Manuel Akanji were recalled.

After a bright start by the Citizens, Liverpool almost took the lead out of nowhere on 14 minutes after Conor Bradley whipped in a cross that only needed a tap-in but Nunez could not reach it with on a slide at the back post.

Pep Guardiola's charges eventually went ahead midway into the first stanza from a clever set-piece routine after John Stones powered home a header in the six-yard box from a delivery by Kevin De Bruyne.

The game opened up after that, with close efforts for a goal but Luis Diaz came agonizingly close for the Reds just before the interval with a cracker on the edge of the box that fizzled just wide.

City had a bad start in the second stanza after just five minutes a bad back pass by Nathan Ake forced goalkeeper Ederson to commit a penalty after he challenged Nunez who was through in the box.

Alexis Mac Allister made no mistake from the spot-kick, as he equalised for Liverpool with a strike that Ederson got a hand to but could not keep it out.

Jurgen Klopp looked to capitalize on the Reds' momentum, as on the hour-mark he eventually brought on Salah in place of Szoboszlai.

City were under immense pressure and with 20 minutes to go, Guardiola made a brave call, as he substituted De Bruyne, who was unhappy walking off the pitch and brought on Mateo Kovacic.

The Citizens were still under attack from Liverpool, who were the most threatening side in the closing stages.

However, it was still anybody's game in the dying minutes as Jeremy Doku almost snatched the winner for the visitors but was denied by the post from a shot in the box.

Liverpool and Man City could not be separated in the end, as they remained second and third on the log respectively, separated by a point.
