With another edition of the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates coming up over the weekend, there have been countless memories and for Pirates legend Teko Modise, there's one derby that stood out in his career.

It is always a spectacle when there is a feast of goals in the Soweto derby, with recent clashes such as Pirates edging a five-goal thriller in the 2011/22 season thanks to a brace by Benni McCarthy and another goal by Andile Jali as Chiefs scored two goals from behind that were not enough via Siphiwe Tshabalala and Lehlohonolo Majoro.

There was another five-goal thriller in the 2019/20 campaign after Amakhosi edged it courtesy of a winning goal from the penalty spot by Daniel Cardoso.

But one of the most thrilling affairs, a 2-2 draw in Durban in 2007 is still regarded as one of the most entertaining after the former Chiefs striker Mabhuti Khenyeza set the record of the fastest goal in the Soweto Derby after opening the scoring within 19 seconds.

For Modise, he fondly remembers the four-goal thriller as one of the scariest, in so far as the stage being set is concerned, after that particular derby doubled up as a FIFA event in Durban, three days prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup preliminary draw.

It was also the first time that the Soweto derby went to a world audience, as it was broadcast in 43 European countries after Eurosport secured the rights for the game, in addition to the match also being shown throughout Africa.

'The General' says the festivities and significance around the game made it 'scary'.

"The one I really remember was the one of 2-2 in Durban, the FIFA delegates were there. I think that was one of the biggest derbies I've played. That one was scary," Modise said on SuperSport Unplugged.

"That one was very scary because at the time the fact that you know that now you're hosting the World Cup, the FIFA delegates are there, everyone that matters is there, all the politicians, all eyes on us.

"We actually wore suits, for the first time at Orlando Pirates we were wearing suits, so it was a very important game and luckily we played 2-2 but it was a beautiful game," he added.

Chiefs will be looking to turn the tables against Pirates on Saturday after losing the first round clash 1-0.
