Kaizer Chiefs’ off-season discard Teddy Akumu has continued to struggle for playing time since completing a move to Japanese outfit Sagan Tosu with almost half the season already played.

Akumu joined Tosu in December after spending six months without a club following the termination of his contract at Kaizer Chiefs and subsequent release in June 2022.

The 30-year-old subsequently started out with his new club in January 2023 in preparation for the new season that runs on a full calendar schedule.

However, with 15 league games played to date, Akumu found himself still without any minutes to his name in the J1 league even though his club is in the bottom half of the standings.

The only non-Japanese that Sagan Tosu have fielded in J1 matches so far this season is Hwang Seok-Ho from South Korea.

There are no limits in the registration of foreign players in J1 League though only five can be in the match day squad with those from Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia not regarded as foreigners.

For Akumu it has been a total black out in the league games with the Kenyan not in the match day squad for all 15 league matches to date.

The only action that the defender-cum-midfielder has had has been in the Japanese League Cup where he has featured thrice and scored once.

Even with those league cup appearances he hasn’t played from start to finish being substituted after 56 minutes in his first two before being brought in to play 21 minutes in the most recent.

This means after having not played any competitive football last year, Akumu is now without a 90-minute run at club since November 2021 when he put in a full shift against Swallows for Chiefs.

The J-League is where Barcelona legend Andries Iniesta now plays for table toppers Vissel Kobe.
