Sundowns issue statement on alleged player arrest

Mamelodi Sundowns have issued a statement over reports of a club player allegedly being arrested on charges, which surfaced on Wednesday.

The reports surfaced on Wednesday morning alleging that a Sundowns player had spent the night behind bars at the Sebenza Police Station after his partner had allegedly opened a case of assault.

However, in a brief statement issued on Thursday morning, Sundowns have swiftly shot down the reports that one of their players had been arrested.

"Kindly note that there is no Mamelodi Sundowns player, currently playing for the team in the Senior Team or Development, that has been arrested," the statement reads.

Gauteng Police had confirmed to Daily Sun on Tuesday afternoon that indeed a 26-year-old footballer had been apprehended over a charge of assault in a case believed to have been opened by his girlfriend.

"Gauteng police are investigating a case of assault following the arrest of a 26-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon," Gauteng Spokesperson Noxolo Cwane was quoted by Daily Sun.

Fresh reports have indicated that in may, in fact, be a former Downs star that has found himself on the wrong side of the law.

The case is one of several that have surfaced in the local football fraternity, with former TS Galaxy striker Thamsanqa found guilty of malicious damage to property in November 2023 after reportedly damaging his alleged partner's laptop.

Downs star Thembinkosi Lorch, back then at Orlando Pirates, is also serving a three-year sentence suspended for five years after being found guilty in November 2023 of assaulting his then girlfriend.
