The significance of Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League tie against Young Africans is that it will come with rewards that overshadow what is on offer in the DStv Premiership.

Sundowns travel to Tanzania for a blood and thunder quarterfinal first leg meeting to be played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The Tanzanian giants will enjoy partisan support at the 60 000-seater facility and beyond all the clandestine activities known to happen to visiting teams when they get to Dar es Salaam, what matters will be determined on the field.

At stake is USD1,2 million (approx. R22,8 million) for the aggregate winners, who will be determined after the second leg in Pretoria on April 5.

The losers will get USD900 000 (approx. R17 million).

This means whatever happens in this quarterfinal will outweigh the R15 million that the DStv Premiership offers for the champions, who are set to be Sundowns for the seventh consecutive season.

Sundowns will ultimately be chasing the winners’ prize of USD4 million (approx. R76 million) on offer this season.

The losing finalists will get half of that ‘moolah’, which equates to about R38 million.

Such is the worth of the USD1,2 million on offer for the quarterfinals winners this season that it is the second-highest amount that Sundowns stand to bank ever in this competition.

The highest they ever got in the Champions League was USD1,5 million (approx. R28,5 million) as kings of the continent in 2016.

Sundowns got USD875 000 (approx. R16,6 million) for reaching the semi-finals of the continent’s premier club competition last season.

This was before the latest increment in prizemoney for all CAF competitions came into effect.

The previous season (2021/22), it was USD650 000 (approx. R12 million) for reaching the quarterfinals.

It was the same amount that they banked for reaching the last eight in the two previous editions of the Champions League, while their semi-final efforts in the 2018/19 season were rewarded with USD875 000 (approx. R16,6 million).

For finishing as runners-up in 2001, they got USD750 000 (approx. R14,2 million).

Sundowns already have USD4 million (approx. R76 million) for winning the inaugural African Football League.
