Mamelodi Sundowns have left their domestic schedule in suspense due to their continental commitments.
Mamelodi Sundowns have left their domestic schedule in suspense due to their continental commitments.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ domestic schedule has been pushed to a secondary placing as they continue with their continental supremacy chase which comes with financial rewards belittling of what is on offer on the local scene.

Sundowns are through to the final of the African Football League and will travel from Egypt, where they played on Wednesday night, straight to Morocco for the first leg of the decider against Wydad Casablanca on Sunday.

After the first leg against Wydad, Sundowns will have yet another long trip to take back to Johannesburg which could mean they only land on Tuesday.

The PSL has fixtured them to travel to Durban next Wednesday to play AmaZulu, but that game is now hanging in doubt.

Sundowns will then host the second leg of the AFL in Tshwane on Saturday November 11, which will also be the day when the Soweto derby is played at FNB Stadium.

This means the league match that The Brazilians were scheduled to play against TS Galaxy on November 12 will now be postponed.

The dates from November 13-21 fall under the FIFA calendar week which is strictly reserved for international football.

After the FIFA week, Sundowns will get into action in the CAF Champions League group stages with games against FC Nouadhibou at home (November 24), TP Mazembe away (December 1), Pyramids at home (December 8), and Pyramids away (December 19).

This means Sundowns’ league match games against Cape Town Spurs on December 9 will have to be moved just like the TS Galaxy game while contests against AmaZulu (November 8) and SuperSport United (November 28) are hanging for now.

After the November FIFA calendar week, five weeks will be available until the New Year for Sundowns to play four Champions League matches plus whatever else can be squeezed on the domestic scene.

The further challenge is that domestic football will pause straight after games on December 30 and only resume on February 13 to make way for the AFCON finals in Cote d’Ivoire.

The AFCON finals will run from January 13 to February 11 with Bafana Bafana in Group F along with Namibia, Mali, and Tunisia.

Sundowns will provide the bulk of players to the senior national team with Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Mothobi Mvala, Rivaldo Coetzee, Grant Kekana, Thapelo Morena, Teboho Mokoena, Aubrey Modiba, Bathusi Aubaas, Thapelo Maseko, and Themba Zwane amongst those that stand to be called up.
