Head coach Rulani Mokwena has hailed midfielder Bongani Zungu as an unsung hero within the squad as Mamelodi Sundowns settled for a 1-1 draw against SuperSport United on Tuesday.

Downs were held to a 1-all stalemate in the Tshwane Derby by neighbours Matsatsantsa at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night, with a Bradley Grobler equalizer cancelling out Teboho Mokoena’s opening strike.

While Mokoena's incredible long-range effort will get all the credit, the head coach insisted that more credit should also be given to how Zungu has fitted into the way Sundowns play and allows more freedom to the Bafana Bafana star.

The former Amiens man has been utilized as a false centre-back in two of the Brazilians' last three league games, much to the surprise of the fanbase.

"Well, the team deserves more credit (for Mokoena’s goal) because they had to be a lot brave, had to be brave, because when Zungu steps into he next line it frees Tebza (Mokoena) up a little bit more. And Zungu, apart from maybe one or two errors against Chippa (United), the role he is playing at the moment, he’s unbelievable," he said in the post-match

"Even with box entries, Bongani Zungu is getting three or four box entries in 90 minutes and really he deserves more credit than he gets because I think Bongz is playing very, very well.

"Today, he was good I think. Against Chippa, not so good, but it’s because in the last two or three games he has set the standard really, really high and in a moment where we were struggling to find something that could create us more overloads

"I don’t think he’s very far, but I still don’t think we’ve seen the best of him. I don’t think he’s far and it’s for many reasons."

Sundowns now turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup, where they host Maritzburg United at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday. Kick-off is at 18:00.
