Mamelodi Sundowns' former captain and midfielder Hlompho Kekana has explained why he opted against joining Orlando Pirates.

In August 2022, Kekana called time on a decorated career that included eight Premier League titles among other trophies and just over 450 appearances in professional football.

Besides Sundowns, Kekana also donned the colours of Black Leopards and the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtics.

After a standout season Siwelele, the industrious midfielder, at the time, reportedly turned down the opportunity to play for their Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Speaking recently to Mamelodi Sundowns’ Pitchside Podcast, Kekana has shed more light on his decision.

"I had my reasons [to turn down Pirates]," Kekana said.

"I felt that at the time, the responsibility of playing for Pirates was huge.

"Everyone was talking about this team. Then you go there and you don’t know the history properly then I thought man I can’t carry this weight.

"[I thought] If there Is a team that I don’t want to see myself wearing their jersey, it’s this one."

The now-retired midfielder likely harbours no regrets over his decision, as Sundowns has have to rule the Premiership with an Iron fist. Kekana was also a part of the team that clinched the 2016 CAF Champions League title.
