Tau went on to win the 22/23 Champions League with Al Ahly, despite suffering a 5-2 defeat to Sundowns in the group stages, becoming the first South African player to win the prestigious cup with two different teams.
"I think, he [Mailula] is playing for Sundowns, he's playing as a striker. He's already there [at the top level]. We don't even know if he's a left footer or a right footer (laughs)," Tau said of Mailula's huge potential.
"But he's a good boy. We only wish him the best and he will grow. Our paths are different. My path will never be the same as anyone else's and their paths will never be the same as mine. He will write his own story."
Tau scoring the opening goal of the match as South Africa recorded a 2-1 victory over Morocco on Saturday at FNB Stadium. Mailula was an unused substitute.
