Competing in too many competitions is the main reason Mamelodi Sundowns struggle to win domestic trophies, that’s according to club legend Roger Feutmba.

Though they've been dominant in the DStv Premiership in recent years, winning domestic cup competitions has proven difficult for the league champions.

"They are involved in too many things, and that takes a lot of energy, " Feutmba reasons, speaking to KickOff.

"You will always have some few players who are a little bit tired or injured. Remember, cup games are different from the league in the sense that you come up against a team that doesn't have anything to lose.

"Sundowns is a well-organized team, the best in the country at the moment, and [and has been] for many, many years. But being involved in too many competitions makes things a bit difficult. The Champions League is the most important one to them," adds the former midfield general.

On Friday evening, Masandawana face Motsepe Foundation Championship side University of Pretoria in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup, and Feutmba believes the second-tier outfit should take it easy in that encounter and reserve their energy for the promotion race.

Tuks currently lie second in the standings, one point behind Magesi FC.

"I don't think they should go all out in this game, especially playing a very difficult team like Sundowns. What should matter the most to them is the league or promotion.

"I don't think they will come to the game with full force, risking injuries to a few players when they are this close to playing DStv Premiership football again. I don't think beating Sundowns is their priority, their priority must be winning the league.

"So, I believe Sundowns will come out of that game with a good result. It won't be wise for University of Pretoria to go all out in this one.

"I believe they will give their fringe players a run, and those players might be the ones who beat Sundowns. It's football, anyway.

"But I think Sundowns have enough quality to win that game."

The match takes place at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, with kick-off at 19:00.
