Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs captain Siphiwe Tshabalala has come to the defence of Amakhosi players over the club’s poor form in recent years.

Amakhosi are set to end a ninth consecutive year without lifting a single trophy in what has been a disastrous season for the Soweto gains that sees them battling to secure a top-eight finish.

Chiefs last chance at silverware this season went up in smoke when they were knocked out in the last 32 of the competition by Motsepe Foundation side Milford FC.

Speaking at the Nedbank Ya Rona House Fan Experience on Saturday, ahead of the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals, 'Shabba' explained why he believes Chiefs’ troubles go beyond the players.

"When it comes to Chiefs, I don’t have all the answers," Tshabalala said.

"It’s a phase which is not nice, which is difficult for everyone. Whenever there are changes, there is always pain. It’s a process and a hurtful one, having gone so many years without silverware.

"Like I said before, Chiefs have got players, very very good players. Most of the players that were recruited to the team were the best players at their former respective clubs.

"It’s just that it’s not happening. Not as individuals, so the challenge is the team collectively.

"So it seems that there is nothing to play for this season in terms of silverware but they still have a chance for top and hopefully next season the team will definitely have a review, of where they went wrong, where they need to improve and who they need to bring on board as well.

"Hopefully, things will change. But it’s a process like I said.

Chiefs return to action when they take on Richards Bay on Sunday in a DStv Premiership fixture.
