SAPS UPDATE: Police confirm arrests in Fleurs murder case

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrests of six suspects in connection with the murder of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs.

In a statement published on Wednesday morning, police confirmed that a Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni-led team tracked the suspects to Soweto, where as many as six suspects were apprehended.

Two days prior, Police had also recovered the late Fleurs’ vehicle, which had already been stripped.

"The team that was appointed by the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to trace and arrest the suspects who allegedly hijacked and killed the Kaizer Chiefs soccer player has made a breakthrough by arresting six suspects and recovering the victim's car," the statement reads.

"The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 April 2024, while the vehicle that was already stripped was recovered on Monday, 08 April 2024."

Fleurs was allegedly shot and killed in a hijacking incident in Florida, Roodepoort on Wednesday evening while waiting to be assisted at a petrol filling station on 3 April.

The suspects are set to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrates' Court on Friday, 12 April.
