Stellenbosch FC climbed to second spot on the DStv Premiership table after defeating Cape Town City 1-0 in the Cape Derby on Tuesday evening.

Thamsanqa Mkhize, Relebohile Mokhuoane, Taahir Goedeman and Thabiso Kutumela got a recall for City, while Athenkosi Mcaba and Darrel Matsheke replaced Ismael Toure and Jayden Adams respectively on the side of the Maroons.

It was a promising opening for the visitors who could’ve taken the lead from a third-man run on goal by Devon Titus after beating the offside trap, but Darren Keet snuffed out.

Yet another chance in the defence of the home side when a cross out wide rolled through to Oura to launch a first-time shot, but he disappointingly snapped wide of the mark.

The Maroons did indeed were ahead three minutes past the half-hour mark when Antonio Van Wyk’s through pass from midfield released Titus to go in-behind to round Keet for the easiest of finishes.

Eric Tinkler’s men missed a golden chance to go level just beyond the break through top scorer Khanyisa Mayo, but it was well courted.

Stellies were inches away from a second later on from a drop of the shoulder outside the area by Anicet Oura before a curling shot followed, but Keet dealt with it.

Mayo soon pushed way up and with a chance to draw matters level for the host, but unfortunately thumped well over the top.

The Maroons did finish the strongest though a first-time shot on the volley by Sihle Ndluli, but it was kept out seeing the visitors to victory and second spot on the table.
