After leaving leaving Orlando Pirates in 2018, defender Ayanda Gcaba has been spotted training with Motsepe Foundation Championship newbies MM Platinum, more popularly known as La Masia.

The club is understood to be assessing the 36-year-old defender with the possibility of signing him as they look to bolster their squad with some experience ahead of their debut season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship (formerly GladAfrica Championship).

Ggcaba is most famous for his time with Orlando Pirates where he made 115 appearances for the Buccaneers between 2012 and 2018. Gcaba was also in South Africa’s squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations but the writing was on the wall for his Bucs exit after he fell down the pecking order follwing the arrival of Serbian coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic in 2017.

The intial result was a loan spell at Platinum Stars in search of regualr game time, after which, the defender's time with Pirates officially ended and he secured a permanent move to Jomo Cosmos.

His career has not quite reached the same heights since his Bucs days but his vast experience may come in handy for the Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers.

At club lever, The veteran defender has also appeared for Free State Stars, Jomo Cosmos, Cape Umoya, Royal Eagles and most recently, Sinenkani FC in the ABC Motsepe League.

Platinum secured promotion into the Motsepe Foundation Championship after beating Spear of the Nation at 1-0 at Olen Park in Potchefstroom last month. They walked away with a cool R1 million winning prize money while runners up Magesi FC received R600 000.

The Wetbury outfit is believed to have conducted assessments throughout the last week and is expected to recruit some more players for the upcoming campaign.

With the ABC Motsepe League winning prize money increased from R1 million to R3 million for the 2022/23 season, it’s also widely expected that the Motsepe Foundation Championship prize money will be increased as well.
