Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has dedicated reaching the Carling Knockout Cup final, to late midfielder Oshwin Andries and former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker.

Andries passed away in February this year after being murdered in Klapmuts. The 19-year-old midfielder was a budding gifted youngster who came through the ranks of Stellies Youth Academy and managed to make eight appearances with the senior team before meeting his death early this year.

Barker died in June this year after being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. The former Amazulu mentor remains the only South African coach to win the Africa Cup Of Nations in 1996. Barker also coached several teams in South Africa including Durban City, Manning Rangers, Durban Bush Bucks, Santos, and Bidvest Wits.

Stellenbosch FC will meet TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup final at the Moses Mabhida stadium on December 16 and Barker is also excited about the prospect of playing the match in his hometown in Durban.

“Right from the beginning of the year, we lost one of our soldiers Oshwin Andries and I lost my Uncle Clive (Barker) so for me I dedicate going to the final to both Aswin and Clive hopeful I can come back (and win the trophy) said Barker.

“I grew up in Durban as a youngster and hopefully, I can come back in two weeks and do them proud and do our club proud and go all the way and win the finals. So getting to the final, one thing the main objective is to win the final,” he added.

Stellenbosch FC have already played two semi-finals this season after also participating in the MTN8 tournament where they were edged out of the competition by Orlando Pirates.

“Great commitment from players, they deserve it, they work hard every day, a young energetic squad of players with good qualities and I am very proud of them. I also want to thank the fans who arrived at half time after 20 hours bus trip to give them and to reward them with a second good half performance,” Barker added.
