Desiree Ellis' Banyana Banyana side were impressively one of the biggest climbers in the latest FIFA women's world rankings after reaching the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup for the first time ever.

FIFA published its latest rankings on Monday with a number of positive changes for African teams after an impressive showing at the recently-concluded World Cup hosted in New Zealand & Australia.

World Cup debutants, Morocco, made the biggest jump from 78 to 58th, moving up a huge 14 places.

While Banyana were the second biggest climbers in the rankings who are now 45th on the standings, moving an impressive 9 positions.


Nigeria remains the top-ranked African nation. The Super Falcons are just outside of the top 30 (32nd), having moved 8 places. With Zambia’s Copper Queens also made a good improvement in their rankings after moving from 77th to 69th position.

Meanwhile, FIFA Women's World Cup bronze-medalists, Sweden are officially  the top-ranked nation. Spain were recently crowned world champions in an epic final win over England by 1-0 on Sunday.
