Two Bafana players have been named in the official CAF AFCON Team of the Tournament following the conclusion of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Although South Africa could progress no further than the semi-final after a 4-2 defeat to Nigeria in the penalty shoots out, both team captain Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena have been named in CAF’s official Team of the Tournament.

Williams, who walked away with the Golden Glove after keeping five clean sheets from seven matches, put a standout performance against Cape Verde and DR Congo.

The 32-year-old also put in a record-setting display in a penalty shootout against Cape Verde in the quarter-final in which he saved four penalties – the highest amount a goalkeeper has stopped in a single shout in the history of the competition.

Williams was subsequently awarded the Man of the Match for his heroic performance.

Club teammate Mokoena was the second South African player named the Team of the Tournament after several outstanding performances from the midfielder.

The 27-year-old put in a Man of the Match-winning performance as Bafana sealed a memorable 2-0 victory over Morocco in the last 16 of the competition. Mokoena won and scored a late free-kick to help Bafana see out the visitors against The Atlas Lions.

Meanwhile, Bafana landed at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday morning to a heroes’ welcome for clinching Bafana’s first AFCON medal in 24 years.
