With AmaZulu having recently unveiled a brand new basketball collection for fans, Royal AM owner Shauwn Mkhize was also spotted rocking a full basketball kit this week. This begs the question; what is with KwaZulu-Natal teams and their newly found love for the American sport?

The story

On Thursday, the AM boss posted several images on Instagram rocking the Atlanta Hawks' full kit on an outdoor court. It is unclear why she wore the NBA team's full attire but is it perhaps a coincidence that AmaZulu actually released basketball fanwear last week as well?

Mkhize's captain did little in terms of giving any clues, as she simply wrote: "Slam Dunk. Taking a small break from soccer and joining the “six foot” gang on the basketball court.

"@slabmmg [American music artist Whole Slab] I am ready for our next one on one ?????? This really reminds me of my tomboy days.

"One thing about me, I easily adapt to any situation. Put me on a soccer field and I’ll score a goal, put me on a basketball court and I’ll take a free throw! That’s what keeps me going.

"Get too comfortable and you lose sight of the ball/prize. Have a great Thursday fam."

Maybe the KZN teams are planning a little basketball tournament, who knows? Nevertheless, on the football pitch, very little separates the two sides, although Usuthu sits in the top half of the table, while Thwihli Thwahla are struggling in the bottom half.

Just one point separates them though, with the latter outfit set to take on Kaizer Chiefs of Sunday, a side they are yet to lose against since joining the DStv Premiership in 2021/22. Meanwhile, Romain Folz's side will battle second-placed Richards Bay United in another KZN derby.
