It's no secret that football is a short career, however, one former Orlando Pirates star has proven that one can blow around R1.2 million worth on cars, women, and alcohol. Here's a look.

The story

It is a story many South African football lovers have seen over decades; a player with great talent suffering a massive fall from grace due to a reckless lifestyle, which often consists of spending heavily on partying.

Former midfielder Gerald Shoni Modabi blew more than a million during his nomadic career. The now 41-year-old hopped through many clubs in the PSL but this was unfortunately a result of his character, which often led to him prematurely parting ways with clubs due to disciplinary issues.

He was featured in Mzansi Magic's latest season of I Blew It, where he revealed that he was given a contract worth R1.2 million by the Bucs after joining them from Dynamos FC in 2006.

His love for cars was a major part of his reckless spending, as he recalled having damaged one of his first cars coming back from Steven Pienaar's party. He said: "I went to Steven Pienaar's 21st birthday and I got into a car accident. To fix the car, I needed R38 000. I was sulking and I didn't go to training because I didn't want to take the team bus like other players. In my head I thought I was Ronaldo."

Modabi admits that he was viewed as a trouble maker by some of his former clubs, thus, resulting in him not dropping down to the second-tier before re-emerging in the topflight. At Winners Park, he made around R140 000 after helping the club survive relegation.

He was next off to Dynamos after the club paid R200 000 to sign him from Winners Park, and he was given a cut of R50 000 in the transfer. After eventually landing at Pirates on a three-year deal, he had a signing-on fee of R600 000 and had a salary of about R30 000, which was quite handsome back in the late 2000s.

Did you know?

Modabi was a close friend to former PSL icon Gift Leremi and has previously revealed that the deceased star once crashed his yellow Mini Cooper.

He now believed to be a coach in the Pirates' youth ranks
