Nasarawa United FC of Lafia are owned by the Nasarawa State government. The club was founded in 2003 after the Nasarawa State government bought Black Stars FC of Gombe and aquired their slot in the second-tier league. Nasarawa gained promotion to the Premier league in 2004/05, but got relegated four years later. They were, however, promoted back to the Premier League in 2012. The club had a taste of continental football in 2007 when they featured in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
