Founded in 1993 out of the breaking up of the old Czechoslovakia, this will be a first-ever World Cup appearance for the Slovaks after failing to qualify for the previous three editions.
It is fair to say that the Czech Republic are the more fancied of the two as a footballing nations, but while they stuttered along in qualifying, Slovakia were dominant in their pool.
They have a squad of hard-working players with good technical ability and string organisational skills, but none of the flair possessed by western European and South American sides.
