Former Ghana captain C.K Akunnor says he meant no malice when he said recently there was no way current Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah would have played for Ghana in his club less state.

Akunnor’s comment, made to the All Sport newspaper has added another dimension to the ongoing Appiah debate but the man he insist people have read the wrong meaning into his statement.

“People got the message wrong. What I was saying was that in our time there was better depth in our team so it would have been easy to find someone who comes in at Appiah’s expense and plays great,” he told KickOffGhana.com.

“I was merely suggesting that in our time there was so much quality his absence would not have created a problem. Now we can’t do without the likes of Essien, Appiah and the rest.”

C.K is adamant that there is a lack of depth in the team and reckons it could become a problem in future.

“I think there is a lack of depth in the team. There are people coming through like Kwadwo Asamoah at Udinese but it will take time. Until then we have to rely on them the established ones which is not good.”
