Kanu will retire after World CupKanu will retire after World CupPosted: 2009-11-16 20:03 Much-celebrated Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu will hang up his international boots after the Super Eagles end their World Cup campaign in South Africa in June. Speaking immediately after the Nigerians booked their place at the finals with a 3-2 success over Kenya, Kanu heaped praise on their opponents but indicated his confidence that a winner was going to come.“Kenya have a very good team," Kanu told Goal.com. "They played well but we are happy to win. Despite the pressure, we knew we could do it. It was just was a matter of time. Now we have a chance to go to World Cup and do well. Our chances are good." On his retirement from international football, Kanu said, “I will quit after this World Cup. I cannot play when I am 50. I have reached the heights and my aim is to go to World Cup. I thank God that finally after all the fight, all the struggle, all the hard work, we are there." Kanu was an unused substitute in the weekend's match. During the previous encounter between the two teams in Nigeria, he came off the bench to help the Super Eagles turn the tables on the dominant Harambee Stars.

Kunle: 2009-11-16 20:37 Dear forumites.......Its a day after the anticipated great weekend. That the SE picked a SA World Cup ticket and that the GE lost the U17 final is no longer news. nelson: 2009-11-16 20:41 what a fantastic retirement!!!he really plays his due for nigeria football, once again i say bravo to you kanu. val: 2009-11-16 20:52 @Kunle, it was a welcome news that we lost the u-17 world cup and qualified for South Africa 2010, even a lay man knows which is more prestigious. With the wranglings and controversies that trailed the LOC, GE, NFF and Nigerians in general regarding this tourney, we should be satisfied with the successful hosting and a silver medal which was above all expectations. oge: 2009-11-16 21:27 @billion...A giant billboard of this very goodlooking warrior should be made and erected in front of billions house, while the biggest frame of this picture should be delivered to billion,it,he should be made to look at it first thing in the morning and also last thing before bedtime..lol 9ja: 2009-11-16 21:28 THANK YOU KANU YOU ARE GREAT PLAYER AS LONG AS FOOTBALL IS CONCERN.I WANT TO ASK QUESTION WHY IS IT SO DIFFICAULT FOR US TO WIN IN ABUJA STADIA? BOTH JUNIOR AND SENIOR TEAM. SINCE THE OPENING OF THIS ABUJA STADIA WHICH NIGERIA LOSS TO 3/0 WE HADLY SUCCEED THERE.I WONDER WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT STADIA HOPE NO SOUL INVOLVED IN THE CONSTRUCTION. I NEED AN ANSWER New: 2009-11-16 21:29 Please Uncle Kanu, we love you so much but the time has come for you to retire. I know your spirit is willing but your legs can no longer carry you due to old age. At close to 50, I do not see the point you want to make again. Please do not spoil our party by imposing yourself on the coaches. You have won FA cup, champions league, olympics gold, Nigerian league with Iwuanyanwu nationale etc. Please give the young blood a chance and do not become another African sit tight leader. So, Uncle, papa Kanu, leave now pleaseeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 13thSniper: 2009-11-16 21:46 It's good you said that cos u have nothing doing with the national team after the world but for now i think the team needs your experience and encouragement in the world cup most teams need that one man whom every player feels proud playing along side even..Blanco has been wonderful helping Mexico i think you can do the same. I wish u all the best PAPILO Clovis: 2009-11-16 23:06 Thank you for all the wonderful memories. You name is marked in soccer history book forever. Flex: 2009-11-16 23:38 @ Emeka and NEW abi na OLD.... U better get the facts correct b/4 u start talking nonsense in this forum. How do u know that Kanu is 45 and 50 yrs old? Did u attend the same secondary school with him? Idiots. To brush up ur knowledge a little bit, Papilo out From Holy Ghost College in 1991. Just do the simple arithmetic.... R u telling us that he was 27 yrs old or 32 yrs old when he finished secondary school? If the 2 of u have Evidence like ur Mentor Adokie, u better go and publish it or else, the two of u will recieve the Blessings of Okija Shrine. With due respect, Kanu needs to rest and hunt for talent accross the country to coach as U-17. He shd not attempt to go run in Angola again. Olrun maje e loku eeyan lorun oo. Baba ti dagba.... Thank God Adokie was not born in 1993 to keep Kanu's picture.... etibensi: 2009-11-17 00:20 Great word Papillo.Thank you for letting us know that you are almost clutching 50 and your legs can"t carry you anymore.Make you kuku no go South Africa so that one small boy go take your place.Thank you for all the things wey you done do for Naija. You are a true son of the soil.God bless you. somewhere: 2009-11-17 00:20 Amodu does not even have respect. Why shd he ask his senior to come and run in Nairobi? Thank God he did not say so at last, but he needed his assistance on the bench which paid up of course. CHUCK: 2009-11-17 00:41 Good job PAPILO , you have done well. Please don`t change this your decision, because OKE MMONWU NO KARIA N` OGBO, UMU AZI AMA YA AJA.It is better to go with your respect than to go like Peter Rufai. I strongly believe he was the one that talked the super eagles into winning playing the way they did and not amodu who's only job is to make the line-up and pray for a win just to earn a living. incase u don't know the team needs Kanu more than he needs them, Kanu is good to leave after the world cup. Ozidi: 2009-11-17 02:29 @Toluwase iga egbu kwa mmadu with your fake seeding... Pot 3: Senegal, Morocco, Mali, Zambia where Senegal de 4 Angola 2010 Ozidi: 2009-11-17 02:32 N****wo Kanu is a NigerianAfrican Football hero if you want agree or disagree what is written is written ede wo yaa play: 2009-11-17 04:20 Guys simply stop acting like fools. Is Amodu a coach? or are you guys so blind and poor minded? Nigeria can no longer even compete in Africa. It's all bc of local coaches that NFF can take bribes from, and most of u who re carried away by sentimantal ism and short thinking seircuits. Well i think Nigeria deserve a coach, like cameroon, ivory coast,Ghana etc.... We re Nigerians guys, what's wrong with u guys for God sake. can't u all see? chidi: 2009-11-17 04:57 Papi! you have always been our goldenboy and I ask God to help me to achieve more than you'v edone for Nigerian football.. You have been a blessing to Nigrian football...Bravo to you even as I hope you will help the team to at least a Semi-finaland bronze or final and gold finish in South Africa and have a wonderful international retirement.. Billion: 2009-11-17 05:38 Kanu again? I appreciate your contributions to the Nigerian football but sincerely, I was thinking you'll hang your boots after this qualifiers! I don't think you'll really be needed for the NC & WC. This your hair-do is still questionable...Since the world began, only women are known to plait hairs but how come ppl who should be role models are plaiting hairs like women? It's an abomination!! Udoinyang: 2009-11-17 05:58 The first player I would pick before anyone for the World Cup team is Kanu, hands down. The guy is incredibly talented, the greatest passer of the ball in the Nigerian team. He is a fox of a player, very crafty, his technique is out of this world, and he one player that Rigobert Song and the Cameroonian defense never want to play against: The pass to Chukwu Ndukwe in 2000,the pass to Utaka in 2004. He makes everyone around him better. Played only one wrong pass against France in the friendly two months ago. Was the most gifted in the 93' eaglets. has been African player of the year, has won the UEFA Champions League with Ajax, Uefa Cup with Inter,Premier League, English FA CUP with ****nal,Afro Asian Cup, Olympics, U-17 World Title...this guy is simply amazing. And he was indeed one of the few young players of Japan 93'...and lastly,I will pick him ahead of Jay-Jay anyday (with all due respect). Long Live King Papilo!!! seye: 2009-11-17 06:21 @9ja really you are right oo. I hope they dont take any of our international matches there again especially crucial match like this.. Abuja staduim is not good for our team .. Football atimes needs luck Akpos: 2009-11-17 07:37 Papilo One dey u go make us proud Honestly you are the best player Nigeria had ever produce let the world believe it or leave it what u need to have is the world cup and nations cup i know u have it in you inspire your boys and You guys will reach the final of the world i Believe in you Kanu! thats why i call you Kanu the canoe on the sea no what how the sea troubled u are calm in that eighteen yard box I love you every father and mother wants to have a son like you, am a footballer i want to reach the height u have reach u played in the best clubs the world had ever known u inspired ****nal, Ajax, Nigeria, Portsmouth, Milan what else...Olympic Gold medalist kanu u too much u deserve to hang ur boat u have played football real football and i love you....Kanu I love you Frank: 2009-11-17 09:10 Those of us advocating for Amodu to continue are not doing so out of pity or anything of that sort but because there's nothing a foreign coach will bring in. Rather we'll be faced with poor results a la Vogts, Milutinovic, etc. In 12 competitive matches under Amodu the Eagles won an impressive 9, drawing 3 and losing none! That's the best result of all the countries that participated in the qualifiers! Tell me why Amodu should not continue to stay. We are talking facts and results here. Frank: 2009-11-17 09:13 King Kanu! U are the best, the very best! Winners always know when to quit. Thank u for all the memories. I shall see u in Owerri soon. Dalu, nwanne madu. P.D.P na Wayo: 2009-11-17 09:25 @Billion: pls help me to advise Chief Kanu N****wo... something is better than nothing; any other young player will be better than this Kanu. Anchorman: 2009-11-17 09:25 I hope that the immigration authorities in Switzerland would grant amnesty to Nigerians and other Africans residing in their Country as a way of celebrating the success of their U-17 National team over the Golden Eaglet at the just concluded FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP. Moreso as a way of showing appreciation for the overwhelming support they received from their Nigerian fans especially in Lagos. However, it is my wish that they should spare the good ones amongst the immigrants without status at the moment. I actually like to congratulate the Ghanaian (KOFI) that featured in the team and hoping this would give opportunities to others kids of African descent. Anchorman. African: 2009-11-17 10:31
