Jamaica pick medium-strength team

Jamaica have been boosted by the late inclusion to their squad of defender Shavar Thomas, whose team has dropped out of the end of the season play-offs in Major League Soccer in the US.

Thomas was among several players not called up by the Reggae Boyz for their friendly against Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein on Tuesday because of the MLS championship deciding games.

But Thomas' club Chivas USA have been eliminated, freeing Jamaica coach Theodore Whitmore to include him in a 20-man squad for the trip.

While Jamaica have a valid reason to not call-up their American-based players, the decision not to ask their English-based stars to make the trip to Bloemfontein can be construed as a snub at their South African hosts.

Players like Bolton Wanderers captain Ricardo Gardner and Stoke City striker Ricardo Fuller have not been called up and also out is Norway-based Luton Shelton, who top scored for Jamaica in their unsuccessful 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. He got seven goals in eight games.

Whitmore has included two players from the second tier of English football, London-born Jamal Campbell-Ryce of Barnsley and Jermaine Johnson from Sheffield Wednesday. Both are wingers.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Dwayne Miller (Harbour View), Shawn Sawyers (Portmore United)

Defenders: Adrian Reid (Lillestrom, Norway), Jermaine Taylor (Harbour View), Shavar Thomas (Chivas USA, USA), Dicoy Williams (Harbour View)

Midfielders: Rudolph Austin (Brann Bergen, Norway), Bryan Bayliss (Portmore United), Navian Boyd (Tivoli Gardens), Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Barnsley, England), Keamarr Daley (Tivoli Gardens), Richard Edwards (Harbour View), Jermaine Johnson (Sheffield Wednesday, England), Jason Morrison (Ferencvarosi, Hungary), Lovell Palmer (Harbour View), Demar Phillips (Aalsesund, Norway), Erick Vernan (Nybergsund IL, Norway)

Strikers: Omar Cummings (Colorado Rapids, USA), Devon Hodges (Rivoli), Dane Richards (New York Red Bull, USA)

To Chiefs or rather to Bobby this is the perfect time to recruit players especially ones to plug the gaping hole in defence and to spur creativity in the middle and lastly to finish off chances created in the last third of the field. Recommendations: [defence]- S.Sangweni, J.Musonda, David Rancan [midfield]- B.Theletsane, Igor Alves, Nhlanhla Zothwane, Thamsanqa Sangweni [attack]- Kalvin Kadi, R.Henyekane, Eleazar Rodgers, Bradley Grobler. Bobby does not need to get all these players he can get two for every department, defence, midfield, attack he would have done a good job for a change. In defence we need a leader to play next to Sweswe, Sangweni is good enough, Musonda is doing a great job leading the Arrows defence plus he has international experience, Rancan has leadership qualities as well. In the midfield Alves is being misused at Swallows he needs a carpet football type of team he was very effective during Julio Leal’s tenure Theletsane has been a marvel to watch at cosmos exactly the type of attacking player we need to push Josta to his best and T.Sangweni looks good at Amazulu he can provide cover for Nengomashe in case of injuries. In attack we need one more quality holding striker Rodgers is perfect for this role and one more quality mobile striker any of the other 3 is good enough.
