2010 World Cup

Greenpoint Stadium

Green Point Stadium (Cape Town)

Capacity: 70 000
Budget: R1.96-billion
Architect: GMP Architects
Contractor: Murray & Roberts/WBHO JV
Start building: March 26, 2007
Target LOC/Fifa completion date: October 30, 2009
Scheduled completion date: December 14, 2009

2010 World Cup matches:

Six first-round matches, one second-round match, one quarterfinal match and one semifinal match.

Details and progress:

Now that the legal challenge to the stadium has abated, construction is on schedule.

Detailed environmental studies (much more than other stadium sites) were done in Cape Town because of the selected site in parkland near the city centre. The original design size of the building was changed, which reduced the construction costs. However, the stadium’s estimated construction cost will be more than the R1.96-billion allocated by the national treasury. This will be supplemented by local, provincial and private business investment.

The City

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world with Table Mountain as a backdrop and Table Bay harbour, Cape Town was originally established in 1652 as a way-station for Dutch ship en route to East Africa, India and the Far East.

These days it counts as the third-largest city in South Africa behind Johannesburg and Durban, and also serves as the country’s legislative capital, with tourism the biggest source of income.

Although more famous for its rugby and cricket, the Mother City does have two clubs in the 16-team Absa Premier League in Santos and Ajax Cape Town, a feeder club of Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam. The Urban Warriors are the current Absa Cup champions.

The ‘Mother City’, as it is commonly known, also came close to hosting the 2004 Olympic Games, finishing third in voting ahead of Buenos Aires and Stockholm. Talk is that the city could make a fresh bid to host the 2016 or 2020 Games.
