Mphela was the first player to score two goals on debut for Bafana Bafana, against Seychelles in February 2005, and got another in his second game against Mauritius in the Cosafa Castle Cup.
He made his club debut in the French League aged 19 at the end of the 2004 season and played two seasons with Strasbourg, after being spotted by the French club playing in a youth tournament in Norway for Jomo Cosmos development.
He played three matches for South Africa’s Under-23 side at the 2003 All-Africa Games.
After returning home in 2006 he signed for SuperSport United and then Mamelodi Sundowns in 2008.
He finished the 2009/10 season with 17 goals in 30 games, earning the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot and being voted PSL Players' Player of the Season.
‘Killer’ has just returned from an extended period on the sidelines after knee surgery, but despite his lack of match-fitness, he is still considered Bafana Bafana’s best option in front of goal.
The Mamelodi Sundowns striker has 23 goals in 47 matches for the national team, including the goal of the tournament in the 2009 Confederations Cup third-place play-off, a long-range free-kick against Spain.
He also got the winner against France in Bafana’s final match of the 2010 World Cup, and scored in the 93rd minute to hand South Africa their first win over Egypt in May 2011.
