Winger Mertens had a slow start to his professional career playing for a number of low level clubs with little success. His breakthrough came when he joined Utrecht in Holland in 2009 and after two years there moved to PSV Eindhoven. He was snapped up by Italian giants Napoli in 2013 and enjoyed an excellent first season in Serie A. He made his Belgium debut in 2011 and will be 27 at the World Cup.
